Amoroso’s, a fifth-generation run family-owned and operated bakery, has been a pioneer in the art of sandwich making since its founding in Philadelphia, PA, in 1904. Their hearth-baked bread and rolls, synonymous with Philadelphia’s most legendary sandwiches, are available at restaurants and grocery stores nationwide.

Our History

How Amoroso’s Became The Roll That Made Philly Sandwiches World-Famous

1903

A sibling brand to Amoroso’s, Ginsburg was founded in Atlantic City, NJ in 1903 by Moishe Ginsburg, with a focus on crafting the bagels and breads that anchor classic Jewish delicatessen fare.
1904

Newly arrived immigrants Vincenzo Amoroso, and sons Salvatore and Joseph, open a bakery at 320 Stevens Street in Camden, New Jersey.
1914

Having outgrown their humble beginnings, the family moves across the river to Philly. Their new bakery at 6505 Haverford Avenue soon becomes a neighborhood legend.
1929

Despite the devastating effects of The Great Depression, the bakery thrives by making home deliveries twice a day, mornings and afternoons.
1934

Salvatore Amoroso takes over and, with the help of sons Daniel, Vincent, Leonard and Sal, Jr. before and after school, bakery sales double by adding local stores and restaurants.
1946

Recognizing the rise of supermarkets, Amoroso’s begins selling their Heath-Baked Bread and Rolls to A&P in the Overbrook Park area of West Philly. Other supermarket sales soon follow.
1960

Route distribution expands to neighboring counties and into New Jersey and Delaware. The bakery expands into a new Philly location at 845 South 55th Street.
1974

While undergoing 5 major expansions, Amoroso’s adds frozen capabilities and begins establishing a national distribution supply chain.
1987

“Thaw & Serve” and “Par Baked” programs are added to the line, paving the way for distribution in all 50 states and in Canada, Bermuda, Guam, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the Philippines.
2003

The explosive growth of Amoroso’s frozen business necessitates building a state-of-the-art bakery and processing facility in Vineland, New Jersey.
2012

Still family owned and operated after more than 100 years, Amoroso’s has never forgotten the reasons for their success: Uncompromising quality; unrelenting service; and constant innovation.
2015

Amoroso’s relocates fresh operations from West Philadelphia to Bellmawr, NJ, combined with all production for Ginsburg Bakery, formerly in Atlantic City, NJ.
2020

Amoroso’s completes relocation of four production lines from Vineland, NJ, to the Bellmawr, NJ facility, now running eight production lines covering rolls, bread, and bagels.
